The Goodnight Loving, Slippery Slopes, Mumpsy. |
I am thinking there is so much good going for the north Mills Avenue area as far as live music in Orlando. There's the new Wills Pub (last time I saw "new"), Uncle Lou's, The Peacock Room and if you count house shows the Lo-Fi house can count as well. There's always close parking and not once have I been HASSLED BY BUMS. Has anyone ever gone downtown without being chased down or followed by homeless people or not finding a parking spot? I think not. I hate it! We just saw Mumspy last week at the Social. Yes, we were hassled by bums to and back to the van. That show was weird. The opening bands were terrible though Magpies were a decent bar rock band. That show was Phil Longo's last show as bass player for Mumpsy as he's doing Virgins band now (and going on a European tour in eight days). At tonights show at Wills they had their new bass player. I couldn't help notice everyone in this band has a mustache except Jeff, who only sports a beard. Both performances were pretty fun. Next band was The Goodnight Loving from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They have three full lengths out on Dusty Medical Records. I really didn't know too much about them other than checking out their myspace a few weeks ago. Onstage, they blew me away. Every song was just good, fun, jangly pop with a little country thrown in. A lot of the songs had all four members singing at once. Let me tell you- good good good. Slippery Slopes were great fun, too. I don't think I've written about them in a while. Well, they haven't played in a while either as Rich, the drummer, had a broken his hand. They have a new member on guitar and organ. It's none other than Shawn, formerly of Shit Eagle and Derek Lyn Plastic. There was a lot of broken glass everywhere but that's how their shows go. One of the highlights was when the bass drum was slipping forward, guitarist Britches tried pushing it back with his foot unsuccessfully so he just bashed in the drum head completely. I love this band. Pictures:
