I had two shows to go to tonight, one at the Social and the other at Wills Pub.

Over at the Social they had a weird bill with one band I've been wanting to see for about two years opening. It took them long enough but Atlanta all-girl band The Coathangers finally made their first trip to Central Florida. They cancelled one date just about a year ago (much to my dismay). It took them getting thrown onto a mini tour with a couple of bands that have nothing to do with each other, musically at least. Label mates These Arms Are Snakes and Young Widows asked them to fill on for some band that cancelled. Those bands are loud and rocking. A far cry from the music of The Coathangers- which is way more fun and poppy.

I was glad to finally see them and they have a fun stage show but tonight's set list was disappointing. They performed some of the 'okay' songs like "Tonya Harding" "Haterade" and "Parcheezzi" but they left out just about all their good songs. What the heck???? Songs they didn't play: "Parking Lot" "Nestle in My Boobies" "Shake Shake" "Shut the Fuck Up". Man, those are their GOOD songs. They closed with "Don't Touch My Shit" which was really the only thing that stood out. They have a new album coming out in the next month or two. I hope the next time they come it will be on a better bill-- one that the audience would appreciate them more.

I didn't care to see Young Widows or These Arms Are Snakes so I headed over to Wills Pub to catch another weird bill of bands and comedians. The bands go before comedy so Orlando power pop band The Rondos took the stage. They have the boy power pop thing down but the thing I'd criticize them is they operate at one volume (loud) and one speed (fast). They do a cover of Joe Jackson and I wish they would take some cues from him and learn to keep things varied. Power pop doesn't have to be predictable and cliche. Next was the girl power pop Garbo's Daughter, who do bring an interesting mix of ideas to the genre. The girls added three new songs including Mandy Mullins giving up lead vocals for a cover of The Tammy's "Part of Growing Up" to the drummer Kristin Messina.

I didn't really stay for the comedians. I mean, c'mon I don't know any funny ones- especially ones that play rock clubs that aren't Neil Hamburger. I was in and out and not once did I hear anything terribly funny.
